Be it remembered that on the twenty ninth day of August, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty three, before the Probate Court of said county a writing was produced purporting to be the last will and testament of Patrick Harless late of said County dec’d and Riley Gard and Seth Gard the subscribing witnesses to said will appeared in open court and on oath testified to the due execution and attestation of said will, and said testimony reduced to writing and by said witnesses subscribed is annexed to and filed with said will. And it appearing to the court that said will was duly attested and executed, and at the time of the execution thereof the said testator was of full age, of sound mind and memory, and not under any restraint, the court admit said will to probate, and order the same together with the said testimony to be recorded, and the same is in the words and figures following to wit

I, Patrick Harless, of the County of Darke in the State of Ohio, do make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form following that is to say:-

First, it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid.

Second, it is my will after all is settled up for my wife Catharine Harless to have all that is left, that is now in my possession, and is now owned by me.

And lastly, I hereby constitute and appoint my said wife Catharine Harless, and Samuel Deniston to be the executors for this my last will and testament, and satisfying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of April 1853.

In Probate Court, August 29th AD 1853, Personally came into open court, Riley Gard & Seth Gard subscribing witnesses to the last will and testament of Patrick Harless late of said county deceased who being duly sworn depose and say that they were present at the execution of the will – that they saw the testator sign, and heard him acknowledge the same as his last will and testament, and that at the time of the execution thereof the said testator was of full age, of sound mind and memory and not under any apparent restraint.

And afterwards on the fifth day of October in the year aforesaid, before the court aforesaid came Catharine Harless widow of the said testator, and the court having explained to her the provisions of said will, and her rights under it, and also her rights by law in the event of her refusing to take under said will, whereupon she made her election in open court to take the provision made for her in the said last will and testament.

And now at this day to wit on the day and year last aforesaid before the court aforesaid came Catharine Harless one of the Executors named in said will and renounced said trust, and Samuel Deniston the remaining executor named therein accepted said trust and gave bond in the sum of ten hundred dollars with Benjamin Wilson and London Arnold his sureties conditioned according to law which is accepted and approved by the Court, whereupon it is ordered that letters testamentary on the said last will and testament issue to the said Samuel Deniston as the Executor thereof.

Adelee Lyle Harless
January 12, 1923 – February 22, 2016

Adelee Lyle Harless, 93, of Lynchburg, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Ivan Moore Harless for 67 years.

Born on January 12, 1923 in Boissevain, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas Cheatwood Harless and Catherine Litchford Harless. He was the last family member of 10 children by Thomas and Catherine.

Adelee worked as a self-employed surveyor for 48 years. One of his favorite hobbies was antique automobiles. Adelee was a member of North Bedford Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In addition to his wife, Adelee is survived by his son, Thomas Adelee Harless and fiancée Phyllis Bolton; daughter, Juanita Sims and husband Ed; grandchildren, Joshua and April Sims; great granddaughters, Madison and Allison Sims; special brother-in-law, Roger B. Moore; and very special friends, Catherine Arthur, Wallace Arthur, and Wanda Golding.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow at Moore Family Cemetery in Appomattox.

The family will be receiving friends anytime at the residence.

Tom Martin Harless Obituary

Tom Martin HARLESS
1925 – 2016

HARLESS, Tom Martin Age 90, passed away in Greenville, Ohio on January 7, 2016. Born Feb. 5, 1925, in Greenville, Ohio, the second child and only son of Lon and Genevieve (Amman) Harless, Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest sister, Mary Florence Strukamp, and an infant sister Elizabeth. As a youth, Harless attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and elementary school. Drafted out of Greenville High School in 1943, Tom served a tour in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII in Okinawa and Japan and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He married Hazel Naomi Anthony at St. Mary’s Church in Greenville on July 12, 1947. The couple has six living children. The family settled in Greenville until 1967 when they relocated to Dayton, Ohio. When the children were grown, Tom and Hazel moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in October of 1977 and later up the coast to Satellite Beach, FL in 1992, where they remained until a final move back to Greenville to live in the Brethren’s Retirement Community in November of 2012. Harless had a life-long career in sales. In Greenville, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. A natural athlete, he swam and played football as a youth, played church league softball for St. Mary’s in Greenville in the early 1960s, and rode a bike most days upon retirement in his 80s. Also in retirement, Harless taught himself to refurbish bicycles and often donated them to charity or to neighborhood children. He enjoyed entertaining with stories and jokes. Gregarious and outgoing, he made friends easily and was an ace card player and gin rummy aficionado. He was an active member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church near Satellite Beach, FL and performed church-related volunteer work for the parish, including organizing the food court at the church’s annual festival. He also was a long-time volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and delivered Meals on Wheels until late in life. Although proud to be a transplanted Floridian for decades, he remained a loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds and followed Ohio State and Notre Dame Football. Harless is survived by Hazel, his wife of 68 years, and daughter Susan Halley (Richard) of Greenville, Ohio, John Harless of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, James Harless (Edna Higgins)of Dayton Ohio, Barbara Gotshall (Robert) of Fort Collins, CO, Rebecca Rosen (Clifford) of Freeport, Maine, and Sharon Harless also of Fort Collins, CO. Tom is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday January 12, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 233 West Third Street, Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Father John R. White as celebrant. Burial with Military Honors conducted by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held in the St. Mary’s Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:30 A.M. in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio. The will be a Prayer Service on Monday at 5: 30 P.M. in the funeral home. It is the wishes of the family that Memorial Contributions be given to the Brethren Retirement Community Resident’s aid Fund. Freda Ann Cook Harless Obituary

Freda Ann Cook Harless, 71, of Oceana, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

She was born on January 27, 1944 in Hanover, W.Va., a daughter of the late Herman and Minnie Cline Cook.

Freda was a member of the Hanover Missionary Baptist Church where she was the church pianist and choir director. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International of the Alpha Theta Chapter in Wyoming County.

Freda worked as a teacher and principal for the Wyoming County Board of Education. She started her career as a teacher at Oceana Middle School and her career as a principal at Matheny Grade School. She last worked as principal at Berlin McKinney Elementary School; while under her leadership in the 2000 school year they received the WV School of Excellence Award, in 2002 they were named a National Blue Ribbon School and in 2003 Freda received the National Distinguished Principal Award.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by an infant brother Charles Herman Allen Cook; her maternal grandparents Mack and Mae Cline and her paternal grandparents Carl and Gustava Cook.

Survivors include her loving husband of 46 years Edward A. Harless Jr.; a daughter Joyel Finley and her husband Scottie of Milton; a son Parrish Harless of Charleston; a sister Sandra Gilbert of Scott Depot; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 24, 2015 in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Rev. Jackie Lester officiating. She was laid to rest in the Cline Family Cemetery, Hanover.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Ron Hall, Sam Stewart, Scottie Finley, Dwayne Gilbert, Tracy Cline and Joe Toler. Honorary pallbearer will be Keith Walker.

The family is being served by Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Arlene B. Harless Obituary

Arlene B. Harless, 78, of Saville Twp., Elliottsburg, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born Oct. 21, 1931 in Juniata County to Alton and Sally (Swartz) Comp.

She had worked for the former Newport Dress Factory and enjoyed gardening and flowers, cooking and bird watching.

She was the widow of Maj. Jerry Harless, Floyd Mauk and Harry Campbell.

Surviving are two children, Brian T. Mauk and Sue E. Snyder, both of Elliottsburg; three brothers, Dale and Glen McNaughton, both of Elliottsburg, and Wayne McNaughton of Shermans Dale; three sisters, Ethel Sledzinski and Cynthia Pickel, both of Shermans Dale, and Aletha McGowan of Holiday, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Luke Snyder, Charles and Catelyn Kimmel and Ben Mauk.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Carl, Bruce and Frank McNaughton; and two sisters, Annie Fry and Marie Crockett.

Services were held June 15 in David Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in Newport Cemetery.
